The Color of God

“God is the color of water. Water doesn’t have a color.”

James McBride, The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to this White Mother

“The Color Of Water” is one of my favorite books. When James McBride asked his mother if he was black or white, she said, “You are a human being. Educate yourself or you’ll be a nobody!”

Marrying a black man in 1942, McBride’s mother, a Polish immigrant and daughter of a Jewish rabbi turned storeowner, battled prejudices from many sides. Her wise answers to her confused son’s questions shows a depth of understanding I wish we all had.

God is the color of water.
